November 18, 2003 (Chicago IL) - On Sunday, December 7th 2003, Young Chicago Authors, a local not-for-profit literary organization, will host “Writing the Future”, its ninth annual Winter Benefit at the Chicago Historical Society. Local poets, poetry lovers and philanthropists will gather to watch featured performances of slam poetry by HBO’s Def Jam Poet, Kevin Coval, slam artist Dennis Kim, and Chicago’s YCA student slam champions. The Chicago Historical Society is located at 1601 N. Clark St, Chicago IL (intersection of Clark & North Ave.) Discount parking for the event is available for $5.00 at the Lincoln Park Lot.

This 5pm – 8pm event will begin with a musical performance by the Blue Fog. After the musical introduction, celebrants will enjoy delightful food, drinks and poetry courtesy of students of the Young Chicago Authors and Slam artists Kevin Coval and Dennis Kim. Immediately following, a casual open mic will commence while coffee and appetizing desserts are served. A docent tour of the Chicago Historical Society will be offered from 4pm – 5pm for all interested parties. Tickets begin at $25.00 for students and $75.00 for the general public.

All proceeds go to the Young Chicago Authors, a not-for-profit organization created to encourage self-expression and literacy among Chicago’s youth through writing and performance. YCA provides creative writing courses and performance forums, free to youth aged 13-19, as well as services that aid educators in promoting creative writing within the schools. Currently serving more than 1,200 young people per year, the YCA has become recognized as a strong and clearly focused arts education organization. YCA scholarship graduates have moved on from high schools like Whitney Young, St. Ignatius and Oak Park River Forest HS to universities such as Harvard, Dartmouth, Brown, North Western, DePaul, Loyola, University of Chicago and Grinnell.

For more information about the YCA and its programs or to purchase tickets for the Winter Benefit, please call 773.486.7331 or visit www.youngchicagoauthors.org.
