Theatre Rhinoceros and Mike Zimmerman proudly present SPRAY, starring NYC monologist Mike Albo. SPRAY is a speedy mix of Mike’s signature monologues, vignettes, dances, and rants about our hyper-commercial, over-designed, over-marketed lives. Whether he’s acting as J.Lo’s cell-phone juggling personal assistant, mimicking a litany of advertising slogans at lightning speed, or doing a Britney Spears chair dance in a tiny glittering patriotic outfit, Albo’s shows launch a full-fontal assault on our obsession with materialism and status symbols. Albo dissects society’s over-reliance on media, which constantly reminds us that we can be better. SPRAY is a California premiere, which will be performed on the mainstage at Theatre Rhinoceros - 2926 16th St. (Mission & So. Van Ness) Jan. 15 - Feb. 7, 2004. Mike Albo has performed three critically-acclaimed sold-out solo shows: MIKE ALBO, SPRAY, and PLEASE EVERYTHING BURST -- all co-written with his longtime friend, Dr. Virginia Heffernan - as well as many solo performance tours across the US and England. Fast-paced, hilarious, and punctuated with dance, his performances have been praised in many publications including The New Yorker, Paper, Time Out, The London Observer, The Boston Globe, the Pittsburgh Tribune, and recently in an article in THE LA Times about writers who perform. Selections of his work appear in EXTREME EXPOSURE: An Anthology Of Solo Performance Texts From The Twentieth Century, edited by Jo Bonney. Albo also performs with Nora Burns and David Ilku in Unitard, a show of comedic monologues that has enjoyed critically-raved, sold-out runs in NY, SF, Boston and LA. His first play, SEXOTHEQUE, was produced in Austin, TX and NYC. His most recent play, THREE WOMEN IN INDECISION, will be produced in February 2004 at the Kraine Theater in NYC.
Albo's first novel, HORNITO: MY LIE LIFE, published by HarperCollins, receiving critical acclaim from Entertainment Weekly, People Magazine, The NY Times, The Village Voice, Publisher's Weekly, and many other publications. He has just finished his next book, THE UNDERMINER, forthcoming from Bloomsbury USA. He has written for the Men’s Fashion of the Times Magazine section, The NY Observer, NY Magazine, The Village Voice, and Nerve.com. His love advice column in Out Magazine, “What’s Your Problem?”, appeared from 1998-2000. He also wrote horoscopes for Word.com from 1998-2000.
