Ann Arbor, MI – May 21, 2004 – If your child wants to be a professional dancer or just learn to dance from the area’s top experts, Dance Gallery Studio’s Summer Dance Intensive is the place to be. In salute to Peter Sparling Dance Company’s 10th Anniversary, Peter Sparling, internationally-respected dancer and choreographer, and his company members will be teaching dance to advanced and intermediate-level students August 19-27, 2004.

Directed by Bohuslava (Slavka) Jelinkova, the Summer Dance Intensive is a comprehensive program that includes full-day instruction in ballet, modern, repertory, pointe, character, and pilates at the brand new, 5,000 square foot, state-of-the-art, Dance Gallery facility in Ann Arbor, Michigan, www.dancegalleryfoundation.org, at 815 Wildt Street. Ms. Jelinkova danced for ten years as a soloist and ensemble member of the national Theatre Opera Ballet in Prague, Czech Republic and holds an advanced degree in Pedagogy from the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague.

Dance Gallery is Ann Arbor’s only non-profit dance center, and each year, 100% of their students who audition for national ballet companies are accepted. This year’s winners include the following:

• Alexis Turner, age 10, accepted into The National Ballet School, Toronto, ON and The Dance Theatre of Harlem Summer Dance Program, New York, NY

• Charisse Eanes, age 11, accepted into the Sarasota Ballet International Summer School, Sarasota, FL

• Tiffany Gunderson, age 13, accepted into the Alvin Ailey School Summer Program, New York, NY

• Jessica Shahinian, age 16, accepted into the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA, the University of Michigan Dance Department, Ann Arbor, MI, and the 2004 Jazz Program at The School at Jacob’s Pillow, Berkshires region, MA

“In addition to the Summer Dance Intensive, Dance Gallery Studio offers classes for all ages in ballet, creative movement, pre-ballet, jazz, modern, fitness, and tap taught by experienced professionals,” states Carol Thompson, Dance Gallery Executive Director.

Dance Gallery Foundation was established in 1984 and supports Dance Gallery Studio, the only non-profit dance center in Ann Arbor, Michigan. A former principal dancer with the legendary Martha Graham and José Limón companies, Sparling has over thirty years of professional dance and choreography experience. He is also a tenured professor of dance at the University of Michigan and a leader in the area’s arts and cultural community.
