Company description:: Improv, one of the last bastions of comedy still controlled by the breeders, is finally feeling a little “feathers and flannel” among its ranks. Performing around Manhattan for the last year is Feathers and Flannel, New York City’s only gay and lesbian improv troupe. In a city rife with comedy and stage performances featuring gay and lesbian performers, improv was without any homosexual stars until F&F formed and presented their unique voice, branded “Dripping Wet Gay Improv”. And it’s going to get real wet during June, Gay Pride Month.
To celebrate Gay Pride and school an audience in gay history, Feathers and Flannel is planning a series of monologues to be performed as an opening to each show in the month of June. Written by the group members, the monologues will be a hilarious tribute to gay heroes including Ellen DeGeneres, Fred Schneider of the B52s and others. Along with an audience suggestion, the monologues will inspire the evening’s show and will follow an already flamboyantly funny entrance on the “gay bus”.
Feathers and Flannel performs long form improvisation, which requires only one suggestion from the audience at the top of the show. The team then works together to craft a story based on characters and situations they think of on the spot. The story weaves itself together to form organic connections and often steers itself on hilarious tangents. The team is made up of experienced performers who know how to make a different kind of gay joke.
Finishing off the month, Feathers and Flannel will march in the New York City Gay Pride Parade on June 27th. The team will travel down 5th Avenue through the West Village on their very own “gay bus”.
